Most Practitioners Don't Understand This.

I was at the dentist the other day for a regular cleaning and ended-up getting patient shamed by their new hygienist.

A similar thing happened at a visit to my chiropractor where I saw the new Dr. She started scolding for less than stellar posture. You need to "fix this, or else bad things will happen".

Have you experienced this?

To recap the last post, here is what the hygienist did:

  • She rattled off all of her advanced credentials

  • She said next visit, she'd add her new laser modality at an added $105 without explaining any benefit

  • She'd do the most uncomfortable work every visit from here on out instead of once a year.

  • She then admonished me that I ought to want all this regardless of cost

  • After all, dental health is critical for overall health and don't I want to be healthy?

  • Aren't I worth it?

Have You Experienced this from a Practioner?

How Did You Feel?

  • I felt shamed and scolded

  • Talked down to

  • That I "should" jump on this because of her credentials

  • Not listened to

  • I felt threatened that unless I change, bad things will happen

  • I felt the practitioner was using fear as leverage to force me to change

  • I shouldn't bring up costs

Most of all, I shut down in terms of being open to shifting and changing.

Now, that's the OPPOSITE of what we practitioners generally want to have happen, isn't it. WE DON'T want to push our clients further away from a shift that we are uniquely able to help them reach.

These are two examples of how fear and shaming don't work.
