How Did You Feel About Your Experience?

Most Practitioners Don't Understand This.

I was at the dentist the other day for a regular cleaning. Now, I need to say, I don't like dental visits. That's on me. Some old stuff still being neutralized.

They had a new hygienist who just started.

She proceeded to tell me that SHE was going to do enhanced cleanings because, well, she thought she ought to even though that wasn't what I'd gotten before.

Then she pulled out a cost sheet and it was hundreds of $ over the usual. After all, extra services, extra costs!

I said, "whoa, slow down here, we've never met before. I do get nervous about dental visits. I don't know you".

Here is what she did next

  • She rattled off all of her advanced credentials

  • She said next visit, she'd add her new laser modality at an added $105 without explaining any benefit

  • She'd do the most uncomfortable work every visit from here on out instead of once a year.

  • She then admonished me that I ought to want all this regardless of cost

  • After all, dental health is critical for overall health and don't I want to be healthy?

  • Aren't I worth it?

How Did You Feel?

  • I felt shamed and scolded

  • Talked down to

  • That I "should" jump on this because of her credentials

  • Not listened to

  • I shouldn't bring up costs

Most of all, I shut down in terms of being open to shifting and changing about receiving dental care.

What did I do?

I said "no" to an appointment on those terms. I canceled the appointment and rescheduled with another hygienist.
